What Is Netiquette?

A combination of the two words 'Internet' and 'etiquette,' netiquette refers to the rules we utilize for acceptable behavior online as well as the proper procedures for utilizing online resources in whatever online social environment a user participates in.

Rather than viewing the Internet as some new world with new rules, following proper netiquette is simply an extension of the existing social structures in place throughout the physical world – using the Internet in responsible and productive ways.

Colorado State University offers some Core Rules of netiquette, providing the netizen a base from which to operate online. These rules are a fantastic starting point for any online citizen.
Essentially, netiquette means applying the values of society online – steering clear of hate speech, bigotry, copyright violations, and other violations of human or property rights that society deems negative or hurtful.
