Mrs. Mansfield-Oehm’s Homework Policy

What is homework?

Homework is a range of activities that I assign you to support your learning through the home.  The homework I assign you will be engaging and relevant to the activities we are examining in class.  The purpose of assigning you homework is to help you expand your learning and draw on your real life experiences.

What types of homework can I expect to be assigned?

  • Completion: any work assigned during the school day that was not completed in class.
  • Practice: any work that reinforces skills and concepts taught in class.
  • Preparation: any work that prepares you for upcoming lessons, tests, assignments etc.
  • Extension: any work that explores new contexts or expands on classroom learning. E.g. assignments, group work etc.

What responsibility does Mrs. Mansfield-Oehm have in assigning homework?

  • Assign meaningful activities for homework that will help you expand your learning.
  • Provide feedback about your progress on homework assignments that is timely, explicit, meaningful and constructive in order to help you enhance your learning.
  • Provide next steps for improvement to help you grow as a student.
  • Give you ample time to complete your homework over blocks of time.
  • Minimize next day completion assignments.
  • Not assign you homework immediately before a holiday that is due immediately following holidays e.g. Christmas vacation.
  • Be flexible and understanding when homework completion conflicts with extra curricular activities and activities that support personal and family wellness.

What is my responsibility as a student?

  • Use your homework planner as a tool to help you record your homework and reflect on your achievements.
  • Complete homework when assigned and adhere to due dates established by your teacher.
  • When homework completion is not possible due to personal circumstances, communicate this to your teacher in advance.
  • Communicate to your teacher through your homework planner or student-teacher conference when you are not able to complete your homework due to a lack of understanding.
  • Try your best to complete your homework.
  • Correct homework when taken up and discussed as a whole class.
  • Get excited about learning!
