Evidence of Assessing for Effective Learning
This assessment task was designed to assess learning in the unit of work 'It's Time to Change.' The task involved students creating an information poster using Kidspiration software to communicate information about a change (in an effective manner) to students their age. The task reflects my belief that assessment should be meaningful and enjoyable. Students were provided with assessment crtiteria indicating exactly what was required to complete the assessment, and what was required to complete the assessment well. An A-E marking rubric was also developed to grade student responses.

Assessment Rubric for Creating an Information Poster
(Adapted from the A-E reporting scale, NSW BOS, 2007)
A | In the poster, the student has demonstrated an extensive knowledge and understanding of life changes and can readily apply this knowledge to real life situations, developing strategies and courses of action to appropriately manage change. The poster reflects a strong understanding of critical literacies; use of appropriate language and effective images. The student also has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills of communicating, decision making and problem solving and has the ability to apply these skills to identify and manage change in new situations. |
B | In the poster, the student has demonstrated a thorough knowledge and understanding of life changes and a high level of competence in the processes and skills of communicating, decision making and problem solving. The student is able to apply this knowledge of developing strategies and courses of action, and these skills to manage change in most situations. The poster reflects a good understanding of critical literacies; making use of appropriate language and images. |
C | The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of life changes and how to develop strategies to manage these changes. The student has also achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills of communicating, decision making and problem solving. The poster reflects an elementary understanding of critical literacies; making use of some appropriate language and images. |
D | The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of life changes and strategies to manage some of these changes. The student has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills of decision making, problem solving and communicating. The poster reflects little understanding of critical literacies; making use of little appropriate language and some images. |
E | The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of life changes and little knowledge of strategies to manage these changes. The student has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills of decision making, communicating and problem solving. The poster reflects very little understanding of critical literacies, little appropriate language and images are used.
