Rory Kinnear Explains How He Made Each of His Men Characters Unique

Rory Kinnear, one of the stars in Alex Garland's newest film, Men, explains how he makes playing each of his multiple characters in the film have a unique presence and personality on screen. Kinnear is known for past roles such as Detective Robert Nock in The Imitation Game and Tanner in Spectre. He also plays twin brothers in HBO Max's pirate comedy, Our Flag Means Death.

In Men, Kinnear plays several different characters that appear in a small town in the English countryside while Harper (played by Jessie Buckley) is there on vacation. Some of these characters include Geoffrey, Harpers' host in the house she rents, a policeman, a vicar, and a boy. One of the eerie characters that Kinnear also plays in the film is titled "The Green Man", and is based on pagan folklore according to Garland. Kinnear details in an interview with EW how he manages to make each of the characters that he plays in Men feel like their own unique person. One technique which Kinnear used to ensure each character feels three dimensional and distinct, was to write biographies of each character before filming began. Not only did this help Kinnear grasp the nuances between each character that he plays in the film, but he also describes it being a practical element to filming as it helped him transition in and out of the different characters more quickly. Aside from this, Kinnear also consulted with the hair, makeup, and costume design departments along with Garland while creating the characters in order have their individual personalities and manners reflected in the look of the character.

Kinnear also mentions that although he did not practice staying in character between takes, he noticed that the cast and crew treated him differently depending on what character he was playing each day. For instance, while in costume for Geoffrey, the most amiable character out of the several that Kinnear plays, people on set were more likely to approach him as opposed to when he played the more ominous character of the vicar. These differences in how the cast and crew communicated with Kinnear on set depending on which character he was dressed as, highlights not only the power of makeup and costume in transforming a person's overall disposition, but also attests to his dedication to the characters while filming.

The work Kinnear put in to every character in Men, both on screen and behind the scenes, such as taking the time to fully understand where each of the different characters he plays is coming from, should make it so that the choice to have Kinnear in several different roles is a device in the film rather than a distraction. Kinnear has shown a range in his acting abilities over his career from comedies such as Our Flag Means Death to playing Macbeth live on stage with National Theatre Live. Now with Men, viewers will get a chance to see how much his adaptability as an actor comes into play while portraying many different characters in the same film. Viewers will have to judge for themselves whether his performances are compelling enough to make them feel like each character is its own person despite all of them being played by Kinnear when they see Men, which is currently in theaters.
