About the Pricipal/Teachers...

My name is Tammie Mathewson.  I am the CEO of Kinder House Inc., and principal /teacher at Kinder House Merit Academy.  I am the mother of four children, three of which are now grown and am a military wife of 25 years.  I have taught at various locations throughout the United States.  I received my bachelors degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Maryland University College with a minor in Learning Disorders/Mental Disabilities.  I hold a master's degree in Education with a major in Special Education and Curriculum and Instruction from New Mexico State University and am currently pursuing my EdD and PhD in Reading and Literacy education and Special Education Leadership.  I hold New Mexico teaching licenses in Elementary Education, Special Education and Secondary Education and am highly qualified in Language Arts ,Social Studies, Reading and Psychology.  I believe that it is imperative that children develop a love of learning in order to be successful in life.  Going to school, in itself, does not accomplish this task.  School must be accomplished in a way which motivates children, in a positive way, to want to learn.  Our program seeks to instill this love of learning through a balance of structured academics, hands on learning and character development that prepares the child for success later in life.

My daughter, Elise, is asst. principal and a teacher at Kinder House Merit Academy.  She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts (Colorado's teacher education program).  She is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Early Childhood education and holds New Mexico teaching licenses in Elementary Education and Special Education.   She is highly qualified in Reading and Social Studies.  Elise has worked in Colorado in various school districts with mentoring programs for children with reading delays.  Additionally, she has worked in early childhood education for several years.

Our teachers at Kinder House Academy, our 1/2 day kindergarten program, are also highly qualified. Our lead teacher holds a Master's degree in Education.  All other teachers have a minimum of a bachelors degree and all are NM licensed teachers.

Our program is designed to be a small school environment with a family orientation.  We believe that success comes from small group instruction and individualized attention.  This is a key component that our school offers which many others do not.  We will never have more than a 8 to 1 student teacher ratio in our 1/2 day program, Kinder House Academy or a 10 to 1 student teacher ratio in our elementary school, KHA Merit Academy.
