Story Problems (Subtraction)

Story problems (or word problems) can be complicated or simple. No matter what, there are always a few steps you should follow to solve them. Let's review those steps below:

Here is our example word problem (it is the same as page 4 of your packet):

I saved \$65.

I want \$200.

How much more money do I need?

Step 1: Underline all numbers.

Step 2: Underline all important words.

I saved \$65.

I want \$200.

How much more money do I need?

Step 3: Set up your equation.

\$200-\$65 =

The words "how much more" tell us to use subtraction. The word problem is asking us what the difference between \$65 and \$200 is. Remember the difference is an answer to a subtraction problem.

Step 4: Solve equation. Don't forget your units!

\$200 - \$65 = \$145

Go ahead and complete pages 4-8 in your packet. You should use an open number line twice on each page; you may use regular subtraction for the rest of the word problems. Make sure to follow all the steps for two stickers per page!
