Some resources were gathered along the trails. Water was essential. If they did not find fresh water they could die. If grazing grass for the animals was not available the animals would die. Wood was picked up along the trail when it was available. Buffalo chips (dung) was used as a fuel source. The emigrants also hunted for food along the way.

Buffalo poop(dung) would be flattened and dried in the sun. After it was dried the emigrants would burn it for fuel.
Prarie grass was eaten by the oxen.
Barrells of water were filled whenever possible.
