LAN200207: Essay 2 Topics

The essay topics for your second essay reflect the second theme of this course which is music. After careful consideration of the two following options, please choose of the following two essay topics to consider for your 2nd essay for this course.

Essay Topic #1: Song Interpretation, Analysis (and Evaluation)

You are to choose one or two songs to interpret, analyze and evaluate. They may come from any one of the following countries studied in this course: Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina or Serbia. You may also choose to do combos, for example, one from Croatia and the other from Bosnia-Herzegovina, or whatever you wish just as long as the songs are from the three countries listed. Next, you will to translate these songs to the English language paying specific attention to the following: 1. Diction, 2. Rhythm (within the actual words used in the song). After that you will need to interpret, analyze and evaluate the songs of your choosing by focussing on themes and a personal interpretation after the analysis. Instructions on how to write this essay to follow below. Please note that if you choose this essay topic you must set up an appointment with the instructor to get your song(s) translated into English. Online translators will not suffice for this assignment!

Essay Topic #2: An Analysis of a Reading Based on Ex-Yugoslav Music

You are to read the required reading for this assignment (TO BE ANNOUNCED) and provide a 4 to 6 page essay discussion. Your paper must provide a commentary in academic format that considers the main points of the reading and a critical evaluation and analysis of the reading.

How to Approach these Essay Topics

Essay topic 1 is asking you to do a couple of key things with your chosen song(s). First, you should choose a song of your liking from artists that you find interesting. We will look at some artists in class from each of the three countries mentioned above so that you get a sense of the songs they sing, how the music sounds and so forth. After you have chosen an artist and a song that they sing, you must find lyrics for that song. Lyrics are readily available for you online. We will look at some websites in class where you can find the lyrics. After you finish this, you must then get these songs translated by your instructor only. Note that you have to set up an appointment during office hours to get this step done.

Some advice:

Be sure to choose a song or songs that speak to you in some way because you will be writing a personal interpretation of the song(s) where you will have to consider what the song(s) mean to you in an engaging way.

Choose a song with a good core theme that you can relate to.

Choose a song which captures an intense feeling of either happiness or sadness or a combination.

Select an artist who you are interested in learning about.

Select an artist who sings songs that are generally of interest to you.

Try to vary your choices so that you can write a good response in the amount of pages allowed for this assignment.

The Writing Process:

For this assignment you will write do three things. First you will interpret what the song(s) mean(s) to you; a personal interpretation and second, you will carry out an intrapersonal discussion of the song(s) meaning that you will discuss what you think this song means to not only you, but society in general. You will have to interpret the song(s) so that you think about the kind of impact it may have on society; consider what the song gives to others, for example. Your intrapersonal analysis should discuss how the song(s) apply perhaps to society or a “target audience” if applicable.

In your analysis of the song(s) of your choice you should consider and write a response to the following:

The core theme of the song(s) in question

The core language style/diction used in the song(s) and the affect that this has on you the listener

The core language style/diction used in the song(s) and the affect that this has on society in general

The rhythm of the song/or the song’s wording/

Musical rhythm

Instruments used (if you wish)

Anything about the singer(s) who sing(s) the song(s) you have chosen (perhaps provide the reader a short biography, or maybe a reason why the singer sang the song)

The song’s main message(s) as analyzed and interpreted by you

An elaborate discussion on the feelings which the song invokes

Carefully consider all of these things when writing the song

In your evaluation of the song(s) of your choice you should carefully consider and write a response to the following:

“What is significant about the song of your choosing?”

Here is a reminder of what you should consider when offering an evaluation to your reader:

Evaluate: Evaluation in an assignment requires you to talk about the significance or the importance of a particular piece of literature that you are given to write about. In order to assess the significance of a piece of writing there are some careful steps that you must take1st – provide an analysis of the statement, proposal or idea 2nd – are the statements that are made within the writing that you read valuable to ensure our understanding of the subject matter or not? For songs, you should consider the theme as the subject matter.3rd

– never assume that all arguments, statements, etc. are valid just because the author thinks so, you have to provide your own independent forethought about the subject matter at hand. For songs, you should consider the “arguments or statements” that the “lyrics” are making and write a focussed independent opinion on this. --------- An excellent evaluation usually holds these criteria:

1. Careful reading of themes, issues and topics with a special emphasis on analysis ------------again analysis should consider the theme(s) and how they are presented in the song(s)

2. make clear definitions of all terms, methodological statements and your thoughts for you and your reader(s) and

3. cautiously planning and organizing your answer in written format so that your audience can understand the relevance of your reasons for the concluding statements that you create within the context of your essay

Note that your audience should be able to follow the reasons you have for your evaluations so as to judge your answers in a positive light. Consequently, you should show your reasons in a clear, concise and united manner.

Note for our purposes that the “writing” means the “lyrics” of the song(s) of your choosing.

Recommendations:

For this assignment it is strongly advised that you use personal pronouns, “I” and “we.”

You may choose to begin the essay in the following way: “ The purpose of this essay is to write a critical response and review based on songs of my choosing. This essay will give interpretations, analyses and evaluations of the song(s) of my choosing. The songs are entitled “_____________” by ___________ and “______________” by _____________.

Alternately, you may write your own introductory segue into the essay that focuses on the purpose of your paper and introduces the readers to song titles and their respective artists.

This essay must be between 4 to 6 full pages double-spaced and you should organize it into two or three sections which are roughly the same length:

Section One: Introduction and Personal Interpretations

Section Two: Analyses

Section Three: Evaluation and Conclusion

Essay topic 2 is asking you to do a couple of key things as well. First, you should read the article in full TWICE, noting all of the points that you believe are significant. Read through the article without taking any notes or doing any highlighting the first time around. The second time you read the article make note of and highlight any aspects of the essay that you find to be of significance. Next you are to write a critical summary of the main points that you found to be most significant within the context of the essay. This means that you will have to engage with the text to provide full explanations and summaries of the most important portions in your essay. This part of your paper is also a commentary in a way because you are providing the reader specific information that you found within the context of the text.

After you have provided your commentary/summary on the most important parts of the text, you must write a critical analysis which is solely based on the text that you have read. When providing an analysis, this is what you must consider:

Analyze: In order to carefully analyze anything within the context of your assignments you have to pick the text that you are analyzing apart and into separate parts and tell the reader how and why certain portions go together. Analysis shows your reader that you basically understand the thing that you are asked to read and write about. When you analyze something in your work, you must make sure that you support your statements or arguments with facts, examples, explanations, evidence, reasons, justifications and primary sources (if at all possible).

When writing this, you must be certain that you are focussing only on the text in question (so the reading you are asked to read for this essay topic and that you are thoroughly giving the reader clues that you have understood the text.

After you do this part, you should then discuss the text further by providing a full critical evaluation of what you have read.

This is what you must consider when offering a critical evaluation to your reader:

Evaluate: Evaluation in an assignment requires you to talk about the significance or the importance of a particular piece of literature that you are given to write about. In order to assess the significance of a piece of writing there are some careful steps that you must take1st – provide an analysis of the statement, proposal or idea 2nd – are the statements that are made within the writing that you read valuable to ensure our understanding of the subject matter or not?3rd

– never assume that all arguments, statements, etc. are valid just because the author thinks so, you have to provide your own independent forethought about the subject matter at hand. --------- An excellent evaluation usually holds these criteria:

1. Careful reading of themes, issues and topics with a special emphasis on analysis

2. make clear definitions of all terms, methodological statements and your thoughts for you and your reader(s) and

3. cautiously planning and organizing your answer in written format so that your audience can understand the relevance of your reasons for the concluding statements that you create within the context of your essay

Note that your audience should be able to follow the reasons you have for your evaluations so as to judge your answers in a positive light. Consequently, you should show your reasons in a clear, concise and united manner.

Your evaluation must be on the text and only the text. Do not dwindle on other things, but the most important statements/arguments/themes/issues and discussions in your evaluation of the text in question.

Your conclusion should tie everything together and summarize your main points to your reader. You can also provide an explanation within your conclusion as to how the article is related to the course if you want.

Recommendations:

It is strongly recommended that you DO NOT use personal pronouns when writing the assignment. This means that you must use THIRD PERSON ONLY!

You may choose to begin your essay in the following way: “In _________ ________’s “____________________” one of the main points that the author discusses is _____________________.

Alternately, you may write your own introductory segue into the essay that focuses on the full name of the author and the title of the writing in question and introduced the reader to the fact that you are writing a summary of the reading that you have read.

This essay must be between 4 to 6 full pages double-spaced and you should organize it into two or three sections which are roughly the same length:

Section One: Introduction and Summary of Reading

Section Two: Analysis and Evaluation of Reading

Section Three: Concluding Statements

Citations and other rules (Rules?, Yuck!)

Please use MLA style when citing your work in text and please provide an appropriate Works Cited or Bibliography at the end of your essays.

Number the pages and provide all of the necessary info (your name, date, instructor, course, etc, consult the syllabus)

Use academic language. However, you are more than welcome to use first-person pronouns where necessary if you choose to do essay topic #2. (I changed the rules as I saw fit, but this does not mean that your essay will not be academic.)

Please engage yourselves with the subject matter. That is to say that you should not write: “this reading is interesting” in your essays without providing some information on how or why you find it to be interesting.

While reading or viewing (whichever the above you choose) be certain to ask questions like: “Who, what, when, where, why and how?” to get the most from these sources.

Excerpts from the course silly bus (please take me seriously on all matters pertaining to this course below):

A word about citations

You can use any type of format for your citations in-text and bibliography. I suggest that you stick with one that you are most familiar with such as MLA. I do not expect, nor do I want you to use formats such as APA or CMS (Chicago Manual of Style) for your papers unless it is absolutely necessary to use this style.

For more information on how to correctly employ MLA style, please look through the following websites carefully:

For more information on how to properly use MLA style within the context of your papers, please consult any of these websites:

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/search.php

http://www.dianahacker.com/resdoc/

http://www.mla.org/

http://www.aresearchguide.com/12biblio.html

http://www.thewritesource.com/mla/

Please note that besides these websites, you are more than welcome to consult me whenever you have questions, comments or concerns about citations. I will be more than glad to help you out.

I expect that each and every single one of you understands how to employ citations properly. If not, you will lose significant points. Note that I will be looking for citations within the context of your papers only. Also please note that you should not cite things that I say within the context of lectures unless necessary or you ask permission beforehand.

ROUGH DRAFTS, IDEAS, ETC.

Due to the nature and time of this class, you are encouraged by all means to talk to either the instructor or your tutorial leaders about your ideas for your papers. I highly recommend it and there will be some time in the tutorials given specifically to discussing and brainstorming of ideas. Be sure to use this time effectively and come prepared with questions.

SUBMITTING ASSESSMENTS

I expect that you will submit your assignments on time in appropriate Word Document format. Please follow the procedure when submitting your assignments

Give your file a title which appropriately reflects the assignment.

All work should be typed, double spaced in Times New Roman Font; learn how to create page numbers and headings as appropriate. Your first page must adhere to the following rules:

Your name

Your instructor
s name

The course name

The date of submission (or due date)

Title of Your Work Centred Appropriately

Required Readings

All required readings will be given to you at an appropriate time. Please note that some readings may come from previous terms as we may have not discussed them before.

Format for the Essays

Each assignment you submit for this course carries a specific format or list of instructions that you have to abide by when handing your work in.

All essays for LANGUAGE COURSES MUST employ the MLA citation style. If you do not cite your material appropriately you will risk reductions to your marks. The following are some rules that you must follow in your essay writing:

1. Use academic language. Be certain that you spell every word correctly and that your sentences are clearly written in academic format. Do not employ contractions in your writing such as: cant, shant, shouldnt, couldnt, wont, wouldnt, shed, hed, wed, Id, etc. Instead, you should write out the world in full, for example: couldnt = could not, shouldnt = should not, shant is old form for should not. One way to ensure that you are employing accurate spelling is by hitting the spell check key. You should also possibly print out your work and read it aloud to yourselves. If something sounds weird or off, fix it before submitting your assignment.

2. In academic writing, you must always use the third person. This means that you cannot utilize the word “I” unless the specific assignment allows you to use both third and first person sentence structures. If the assignment asks for your opinion, you can say something like, “this work contains significant information about the Balkans” or something to that affect and then you must give examples of the kinds of information that the work gives to you, a novice reader of the subject matter.

3. Each of the main arguments within the context of your essay must include examples to support the argument and, or opinion. An example would be: “this work contributes to my understanding of the people of the Balkans because it gives an account of how music plays a significant role in their culture because it is a source of expression and feeling to which everyone plays a particular role. The first part of the sentence contains your initial argument and the part after the “because” gives you the example to support the argument or opinion.

4. Answer all of the questions/parts of the essay thoroughly with the use of detail and academic thought. Remember to provide appropriate input into your answers. Do not leave your reader without acknowledging the insights and thoughts that you have about the text.

5. Edit, but only in an effort to make sure that your sentences are clear. A sentence that contains more than 50 words is way too long.

6. Citations
everything that does not come from you MUST be cited, therefore, you must cite every single sentence if the idea(s) within the sentence are not yours. If you do not cite your work appropriately, the highest possible mark that you will receive for your work is 69% or C+ as a final grade, so please be careful. I will strictly check for plagiarism and your paper may be subject to subsequent screening potentially via turnitin.

7. Proofread your work at least thrice before you decide to submit it.

8. Your work must adhere to the following style: -it must be written in a size 12 point Times New Roman font (I will not accept work written in any other font, but Times New Roman), all pages must be numbered, work should be double spaced, your identification information and the identification information for this course must be visible on the first page.

9. Needless to say, your papers should not contain any slang or clichés within their contexts.

10. Make certain that each of your essays are written for the purpose of informing an audience (your reader).

Note that in class, I will provide you with further and more detailed instructions in regards to each essay for this course including the actual instructions.

Academic Honesty:

A word to the student
You are responsible for submitting your own work with your own original ideas. There is to be no borrowing or copying of other peoples work. In this class, this should not be a problem, however, when in doubt, please cite the places where in which you have found your information that may pertain to your answering of a question on an assignment.

Instructions for Comparison of Media Assignment  This assignment is mandatory. You are to write a 4 to 8 page essay in which you compare North America/Canadian/American “Culture” with Bosnian Culture in respect to the ways in which they employ media within these societies. For example, you may choose to write about music, newspapers and televisions shows or books, news, weather, the information highway (the Internet), etc and argue about how it is either similar or different in the two societies. Essentially, this paper should be a reflection of the two different cultures. You do not have to focus on only 1 type of media; you can focus on up to 3 or more different types and discuss the following:
  1. How does each type of media treat people according to their gender?
  2. How does each type of media treat people according to their class?
  3. What emphasis is their on status?
  4. Who controls the media type?
  5. Which media type is the most sex segregated?
If you choose to discuss music as one of your media types in your paper, you must:-compare and contrast race, gender and social issues present in each -compare and contrast the ways in which people are portrayed-evaluate-provide your own opinion on why there are such differences and, or similarities in the treatment of each gender type-comment on gender roles in each culture-you will need to use YouTube to find examples of both American/Canadian songs and Bosnian/Serbo-Croatian ones If you choose to discuss newspapers as one of you media types in your paper, you must:-compare and contrast the role of entertainment in each; in North America, especially Canada and the USA, most newspapers and news media types employ fear and only cover stories that shock or disturb the public (usually emotionally); is this the case in the other culture?-provide a brief discussion of contents in the newspapers-for this, you will only be using online newspapers, unless you have access to your very own newspapers in print from your local area; you can use these. For the Bosnian newspapers you will need to find some. I have a list of some at the end of the instructions for this assessment.-you will be required to employ translators if you choose this-try to tie the news available through television into this; do the things that are presented on the news through television reflect what is available for access in print? Discuss this briefly. If you choose to discuss books, I am flexible with your approach, although you will have to figure out a way as to how you will cover this topic. If you cannot find books that are in the Bosnian/Serbo-Croatian language in your area, you may do searches in Google and other such references.  If you choose to do the weather, you will have to compare and contrast the way in which information about the weather is displayed in each country/region. Which websites look to be more advanced ours or theirs and which websites contain missing information that is necessary to the audience (the readers)? Here are some interesting websites from which you can start your preliminary research for this assignment: Music – in YouTube (or Google) type the name of a musician you would like to focus on (American/Canadian) then you can do a search for a song of theirs as well and then you can search for an international singer. In a recent message, I have given you a list of interesting people to look at. Newspapers – search through the Internet for your own; for Bosnian-based newspapers go to
  1. http://www.oslobodjenje.ba/ - Freedom Bosnia and Herzegovina Press; Sarajevo City, BiH
  2.  http://www.dnevniavaz.ba/  - Daily Journal
  3. http://www.dnevni-list.ba/ - Daily List
  4. http://www.nezavisne.com/  - Serbian-based
  5. You should look through at least 2/4
For books; use Google entries as your starting point otherwise go to the library, perhaps they may have something; go to other places, if possible. Weather – search through the Internet for your own; for Bosnian-based weather agencies go to1. http://www.fhmzbih.gov.ba/engleski/index.php - Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Federal Hydro Meteorological Institute2. http://www.meteo.hr –Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service; Croatia; on the very far right, click on English to display in English3. http://www.hidmet.gov.rs/index_eng.php - Republic Hydro Meteorological Service of Serbia4. http://www.meteoalarm.eu/# - The Network of European Meteorological Services; Alerting Europe for extreme weather; it is cool!5. Look through at least 2/4  This is the rubric for this assignment. Again, it is similar to the first assignment. Please note that ALL of the rubrics or at least the MAJORITY will look like this!
