Community Resource: Poetry

Investigating local libraries…

I found all of the poetry books for this unit at the Seattle Public Library. I discovered that the library’s poetry section is much more diverse, has more variety, and is significantly cheaper than purchasing books in a book store. The students have put together an anthology of their own poems as well as published poetry that they enjoyed. Along with my list of books, parents can look at their child’s anthology to see which poets or types of poems their child really enjoyed. Librarians are a great resource to find other authors similar to those we have really enjoyed. Parents can bring the list of poems to the library and ask for suggestions from the librarians.

Below is a list of several wonderful poets that I wasn’t able to incorporate because their poetry didn’t match our theme: some are silly, some are serious, some are about nature, and some about hopes. Works by these authors can be found at your local library so, if your child shows interest in poetry after this unit, you may want to introduce them to a few of these poets:

  • Langston Hughes
  • Myra Cohn Livingston
  • Carl Sandburg
  • Dr. Seuss
  • Arnold Adoff
  • Robert Frost
  • Shel Silverstein
  • Jack Prelutsky
