Incoming Freshman Summer Assignment

1st Year Biomedical 9th Grade Students

LEARN - KNOW - MEMORIZE

Complete the assignments, learn the information, and be prepared to turn in FLASHCARDS the first week of school. You will have assessments on the infomation.

Use a Biology Textbook, Anatomy & Physiology Textbook, and/or internet to complete the following:

Part I: Human Body Organ System Overview

Name the 11 organ systems of the human body, and briefly state the major organs and functions of each system.

STUDY TIP: Create Flashcards, using notecards with the name of the organ system on front and list the major organs and function of each system on the back.

  • Integumentary System
  • Skeletal System
  • Muscular System
  • Nervous System
  • Endocrine System
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Lymphatic System
  • Respiratory System
  • Digestive System
  • Urinary System
  • Reproductive System
The flashcards should include a general overview of all systems.  For example, the front of the card should read skeletal system and the back of the card should include the major parts of the skeletal system such as  bones, cartilage, joints. You do not have to be specific in naming types of bones or actual bones yet.  In addition, listing the general functions of the skeletal system such as protection and support body organs, framework for muscles, blood cell formation, storage etc.  Lastly, cutting a 3X5 card in half is perfect and will help you edit and limit the amount of information you write! Should you have additional questions let me know. I hope this helps.

Part II. Basic Chemistry

Name and identify the first 30 elements

STUDY TIP:  Create flashcards, using notecards of the first 30 elements on the perodic table.  The name of the element on the front of the card and the atomic symbol, atomic number and atomic mass (round to nearest whole number) on the back of the card. For example Helium (front of the card)  and (back of the card) symbol He, atomic number 2, atomic mass 4.

Part III. Overview of the Cell

Anatomy of the ANIMAL cell only- Identify and describe the organelles on an animal cell diagram.  Briefly explain the function of each cell organelle. (Do not build a cell model at this time.)

STUDY TIP: Create flashcards using notecards with a picture or sketch of the cell organelle on front and the name and function of the cell organelle on back.

  • Plasma or Cell membrane
  • Mitochondria
  • Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • Rough Endocplasmic Reticulum
  • Lysosome
  • Ribosomes
  • Golgi Apparatus
  • Peroxisome
  • Nuclear envelope
  • Nucleolus
  • Nucleus
  • Chromatin
  • Centrioles
  • Microvilli
  • Microfilament
  • Microtuble
  • Intermediate filaments
