Independent Skills – Zipping and Buttoning

Last week we had to wear our coats everyday for morning recess and we worked on zipping, buttoning, and snapping our coats on our own.  I always make the kids try 2 times before I help them so that they can build their fine motor skills and practice the skill in order to become independent.  I would encourage you to do the same thing at home.  It is amazing how much the kids can do on their own after a few tries and the looks on their faces when they realize that they don’t need my help!

Independent Skills

There are lots of skills that you could be working on with your child at home to encourage independence at school and home, such as tying shoes, zipping/unzipping, and buttoning.  A skill that I would encourage all parents to work on with their kindergartener is blowing noses.  Please teach your child how to blow their nose appropriately, instead of just wiping it with a tissue.  It is allergy season for many people and I have seen lots of runny noses lately, which is understandable, but it would help our class stay healthy if our kids knew how to blow their noses.  Thanks!

Build With Bags

I received word this week that we will NOT be getting key tags for the reusable bags part of our challenge, but we will still get credit when people use them.  When you use your reusable bag at the participating stores, simply let the cashier know that you want Oviatt Elementary receive credit for each bag.  We can earn credit when our families and community members use their reusable bags in the following stores in the Des Moines and surrounding areas, including Indianola, Ankeny, Altoona, Grimes, and of course, Norwalk:  Dahl's, Fareway, Hy-Vee, Scott's Foods, and Walmart.  Also, please keep having your child bring the plastic bags to school!

Handwriting

I sent home a sheet about handwriting today.  One side is a note explaining my handwriting expectations and the other side shows you the correct way to make each letter.  Please use this to help your child write the letters that have been taught correctly.  So far, I have only taught the letter Mm so that is the only letter I expect them to write correctly.  Please help encourage this at home when your child is writing.  Thanks!

Build With Bags

Please keep having your child bring the plastic bags to school!  I took the bags to Fareway to be weighed on Tuesday we already had 71 pounds of plastic bags!!!  Hopefully the key tags will be here next week so you can help us get credit by using your reusable bags.  I will let you know when I send those home.

 Go Bananas Reading Incentive

Go Bananas Reading Incentive starts today!!!  I have attached information about this program from Mrs. Vilez.  When your child fills their reading log, send it to school and we will get it to the library so they can earn their “Banana Bucks”.  I did see that some people are keeping them in their folders so they don’t get lost and that is a great idea!  If you have questions about the program, please contact Mrs. Vilez at 981-1005, extension 1064 or dvilez@norwalk.k12.ia.us.

Kindergarten High Frequency Word List

I put the list of Kindergarten High Frequency Words for the whole year in the back or front of your child’s folder.  Please leave that list in their folder so they able to read and learn the words when there is some down time or when they are waiting in the hallway in the morning for school to begin.  You can also use the list at home to help your child learn the words.  If they know the High Frequency Words that we have already taught at school, they you can work on other words, but please on the words already taught first.

Build With Bags

Your child is bringing home a flyer about our Build With Bags School Challenge that starts on Monday, October 4th.  We won second place last year which earned us a park bench that is sitting under the United States Flag outside our school.  Please help us with this challenge this year by bringing dry, clean plastic bags to school and using your reusable bags when you go to the store.  You can start sending the bags on Monday, but the reusable bags part will not start until you receive a key tag, which will be around October 11th.  If you have questions, please let me know!

Book It Reading Log (Pizza Hut)

I am sending home a reading log today for October.  This is separate from the Go Bananas Reading Incentive that Mrs. Vilez is doing.  This reading log is for our classroom and when your child sends their log back, I will give them a Pizza Hut certificate for a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza.  You can read the books to your child and/or have your child read books to you.  If you have questions, please let me know!

October Lunch Menu

October Lunch Menus will be handed out on Monday.  The lunch menu is always on our Norwalk School District Website (www.norwalk.k12.ia.us) if you want to find it there.  On Monday, October 4th, we will be having Chicken Patty on a bun, mashed sweet potatoes, zucchini sticks, and pineapple tidbits.

Go Bananas Reading Incentive

Starting October 1st the library will be starting this years reading challenge for your student(s) called Monkey Around With Books.

Each student will be given a reading log to keep track of the number of books they have read.  After they complete the reading log, they will need to have either their teacher or guardian sign it.  When they turn it into the library, they will earn a Banana Buck.

One Banana Buck per sheet will be given out.  Once a month, we will hold a Going Bananas Sale where the students will be able to spend their banana bucks on prizes.

They can either spend their Banana Bucks once a month at the sale or they can save them up to purchase a bigger item.

The reading incentive will go from October 1st to May 15th.

If you have questions, contact Dyan Vilez at dvilez@norwalk.k12.ia.us

Math Home Links
Periodically your child will come home with a Math Home Link.  This is a quick review/practice on what we did or are learning in Math at school.  Please take a few minutes to assist your child in completing the Home Link.  We will discuss the homework during Math a couple days after it was sent home.  I will not make any marks on the paper so if you see one come back home, that means that we talked about it and it can stay home now.
Grandparent’s Day
Grandparent’s Day was a huge success!  I had so much fun and I know the kids loved showing off for their grandparent’s.  I heard lots of positive comments from the grandparents and special guests so I hope that EVERYONE had a good time!  Thank you to everyone who provided special treats for the day!  We had plenty and will be able to use the leftovers for other special days!

Next Friday, September 24th is Popcorn Day at Oviatt!  If your child would like to have a special popcorn snack on this day, please send $0.50 to school by Friday.  The money raised is used to purchase prizes for our Warrior Way ticket winners.  I will send a reminder in the middle of the week!

Warrior Way
This has been a busy week!  We have learned so much about showing the Warrior Way!  The Warrior Way is showing how to be REPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, and SAFE in our classroom, school, and on the playground.  Next week, the students will be earning tickets for showing the Warrior Way and then they will put them in the treasure box in our classroom.  On Fridays, a ticket will be drawn from each classroom and the name will be announced over the speaker during morning announcements and that person will win a prize.  I know the kids are excited to start earning these tickets next week!  Please encourage your child to show the Warrior Way everyday at school!
Welcome to Kindergarten Packet
I sent home a “Welcome to Kindergarten with Mrs. Brincks” packet today.  Please read through the packet and let me know if you have any questions.  There is lots of information about our classroom and school that will be helpful to you this year!
Dismissal
If you are picking up your child at the end of the day, please do not get out of your car if you are on the curb closest to the building.  Please keep moving forward as the traffic moves so when you get close to the doors, your child can walk to your vehicle.  We would like the traffic to keep moving at a good pace!  If you need to get out of your vehicle, please find a designated parking spot, not along a curb.  Thank you in advance for following these procedures so our dismissal can run smoothly!
Class Calendar
I will not be sending home a monthly class calendar this year to show what special we have each day.  You will need to go on our looping website (www.lovingtoloop.educatorpages.com) and print one.
All About Me Posters and Framed Pictures

Thank you for helping your child with their poster and sending a picture to leave in the classroom.  It was so much fun to learn about my Kindergarten Families this week and I love how the classroom looks with all of our pictures sitting around.  I am hoping to send the framed picture home a few times this year so you can change pictures if you want.  I will let you know when I send them home.
