Unit Week

Focusing of Language Arts (Writer's Workshop)

Pre-Assessment: My students will be introduced to Writer's Workshop for the first time during my teaching week in December. Since this will be the students first time participating in writing this year so far, the students will have no prior knowledge about this content. I know this writing assignment will be a struggle for some students based on observations of them so far this year. Many students in my classroom struggle to write their name, including student 1 who I have been observing. With that being said, students love drawing pictures. However, the students are able to draw, or attempt to draw, a picture about a known topic, including both of the students that I have been observing. Educators know that drawing pictures is one of the first steps to be able to write. If a student can respresent words using a picture, they may be able to explain a picture using words. (This is the writing assignment- Draw a picture and write a word, into a fill in the blank sentence, to explain a penguin's want). There for, if a student is able to draw a picture about a penguin's want, the student may be able to better understand the word they are trying to write. For lesson one of Writer's Workshp, the students will be pre-assessed on their understanding about writing. The teacher will read the students five questions and the students will color either red or green whether they agree or disagree with the sentence. This will help the teacher understand what the students know about writing. (I created this pre- assessment).

Writer’s Workshop Lesson 1 Pre- assessment

(The students will color the box on the right either green or red. Green means they agree or red means they disagree).

When I am beginning to write, I should not have a plan. I should just start writing and make it up along the way.

When I am writing, I should meet with my teacher and review my work.

When I am writing, I should be able to use a rubric to check my own work.

When I am all done with the writing assignment, it should look messy and have a lot of mistakes.

When my writing is complete, I should put my paper in my book bag and not share it with anyone.

Writer’s Workshop Lesson 1 – Prewriting Checklist

** General students will be expected to have more than one idea during their prewriting. Struggling learners, such as the two students who I have been observing are expected to have more than one idea. However, both can be scored/ tracked on this checklist.

PRODUCT OF LESSON: The students will have completed a final draft of a colored picture of a penguin and words to describe the penguin. The picture and words will describe something a penguin may want. When the students put the pages together, the class will have completed a creative writing book. The book will be all about things penguins might “want”.
