SER V. ESTAR

 

 

In Spanish, we have two ‘to be’s to worry about.

Review: Estar

 

•Use ser for a physical aspect about yourself.
 
–Yo soy bajo.  I am short.
 
–Ella es pelirroja.  She is a redhead.
 
–Nosotros somos altos.  We are tall.

 

•Ser is also used for something that describes your personality.
 
–Tú eres ambicioso.  You are hardworking.
 
–Garfield es perezoso.  Garfield is lazy.

  

•Also use ser for describing a profession or occupation.
 

  Ella es profesora  She is a teacher.

 

  Ustedes son alumnos  You all are students.

 

 

•Estar is used for a characteristic that changes, such as mood.
 
–Yo estoy feliz.  I am happy.
 
–Ellos están cansados.  They are tired.

 

•For location, also use estar.
 
–Nosotros estamos en el banco.

    - We are in the bank.

 

-Señor Benson está en su oficina.

    -Mr. Benson is in his office.

 

•Ser is also used for something that describes your personality.
 
–Tú eres ambicioso.  You are hardworking.
 
–Garfield es perezoso.  Garfield is lazy.
