Welcome to a New School Year!

August 8, 2014

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Hello and welcome to a brand new school year! My name is David Higgins, and I will be your child’s third grade teacher for this school year. Just to give you a little background on myself, I am a graduate of Salisbury University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts degree in English, as well as a graduate certificate in Educational Leadership from Kaplan University. I hold Maryland State Department of Education certification as a teacher of Early Childhood Education (grades PreK-3), Elementary Education (grades 1-6), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL grades PreK-12), and as a School Administrator I. This will be my thirteenth year at Hurlock Elementary School, serving one year as a Student Assistant (2nd Grade), two years as a Substitute Teacher, two years as an Instructional Assistant (Pre-K and Kindergarten), and eight years as a Classroom Teacher (2nd and 3rd Grades).

I eagerly await getting to know your child, and I look forward to working with both of you throughout the duration of this school year. I believe that all of our parents can contribute positively to our classroom and its students in a variety of ways; thus, our classroom door is always open, and you are welcome to join us at any time. Please also make every effort to attend parent-teacher conferences to discuss your child’s quarterly progress. Throughout the year we will have special activities, assemblies and field trips that, if you are able, we encourage and appreciate your participation. Speaking of which, our annual Back to School Carnival will be held Friday, August 22nd from 4:00-6:00 PM.

The expectations for your child both behaviorally and academically are very high in 3rd grade, and as such, it is very important that he or she comes to school every day with a positive attitude and prepared to be an active participant in the lessons. I expect nothing less than the best from my students and do not expect this to be an issue with any of them.  By the end of third grade, your child will be expected to be able to fluently read and comprehend 100 words per minute with 98% accuracy using grade level text, as well as fluently recall all addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts within 3 seconds. Your child’s homework can be found in the agenda, where the students write the night’s assignment each morning. Every night, students will read for 20 minutes and record the book on his or her reading sheet. Additional brief homework assignments to reinforce concepts may also be assigned as the need arises. Please be sure to check the agenda for notes, initial the Passport to Success nightly, and have it returned to school with your child daily.

In conclusion, if you or your child should have any questions or concerns at all, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. I can be reached at the school between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM at
(410) 943-3303; however, the best way to contact me is at home in the evenings at (443) 521-0979. If I miss your call, please leave a brief message along with the best way to reach you, and I will return your call as soon as possible. My school e-mail address for use anytime, day or night, is higginsd@dcpsmd.org.

I hope you have had a relaxing summer and are ready to begin a terrific and productive school year! Remember, the first day of school is Tuesday, August 26th at 8:30 AM. Thank you for your time and support.

Mr. David L. Higgins
