ALGEBRA COURSE SYLLABUS Course Description:

Students will be able to:

- Write and apply expressions

- Solve equations and inequalities for one variable

- Use and apply patterns, relations and functions

- Use and apply probability to various situations

- Solve equations and inequalities for more than one variable

- Graph functions and relations

- Graph problems as a means of displaying, analyzing, and interpreting real world data.

Course Objective:

To actively involve students in their learning and develop mathematical power through problem solving strategies, cooperative learning projects, critical thinking and reasoning activities.

Students are expected to have all their materials everyday!

Attendance Policy: Students must attend class to become proficient in Algebra. Tardies and unexcused absences, including cuts, are unacceptable. Consequences aligned with Clemente attendance policy will be given for attendance irregularities. Students with unexcused absences will not be allowed to make up homework, class work, and quizzes.

Homework/Classroom Policy: Homework will be assigned on a daily basis, except Friday. However, students should still take some time to review their notes and make sure they understand the material being covered in class. All class work and homework MUST BE COMPLETED IN PENCIL.

Assessment and Grading: The following weighted scale will be used to determine student grades:

Tutoring: Tutoring is offered to all students that are having difficulty. Students can seek help in room 601 during one of my free periods, by an appointment before or after school hours. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of tutoring to achieve their goal of success.

STUDY HINTS/SUGGESTIONS FOR THE STUDENTS:

Am I:

1. attentive in class when the teacher or any of my fellow-students is explaining part of the lesson? That is being an active listener.

2. doing all I can to create a class atmosphere that is both positive and encouraging.

3. coming to class with a good ATTITUDE – it’s my CHOICE. Do I choose to do the work. Do I choose to learn. Do I RESPECT my peers’ right to learn, respect my teacher and his efforts to provide opportunities for all of the students in the classroom. Raising my hand and waiting to be called on before speaking.

4. taking notes in class and reviewing these notes in an attempt to understand the material better?

5. following good study procedures when I do my classwork/homework? For example, each night do I briefly review the previous day's lesson in an attempt to see some continuity in what I am doing?

6. asking for extra help on those topics which I do not understand? Do I ask questions in class, do I see the teacher for help, do I work with friends on problems which I cannot get?

7. voluntarily taken part in class discussions, and volunteering to put problems on the board when I could?

8. giving this particular mathematics class a chance or have I concluded that it is too hard for me, I do not like it, and I will never understand it, so what is the use of trying very hard?

9. really been spending as much time as I should in studying my Algebra? That is, Have I been STUDYING 10-15 minutes on math almost every night or have I just been putting in time with my books?

10. regular in my attendance to class and is it been as good as it could be?
