*Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1900

*His sister taught him how to play piano

*Left home at age 20 to study composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger

*Wrote music for three ballets: Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo

*His music had an "American flavor" because he used American folk tunes in his music

*From 1939-1949 he wrote music for seven movies

*Wrote patriotic music such as A Lincoln Portrait and Fanfare for the Common Man

*Died at age 90 of Alzheimer's Disease and respiratory failure
