About me:
Hello and welcome! My name is Tim Lam and I will be your math teacher this new school year. As we embark on this year, I want to introduce myself and our department as a partner in your child’s math education.
I was born and raised in Los Alamos, NM and studied Biochemistry at the University of New Mexico. My hobbies include video games, biking, and playing sudoku.
I look forward to getting to know each of you as the year progresses!
Teaching philosophy:
In my experience, the three biggest obstacles to learning are a student’s belief that math is boring, math is impossible, or math is irrelevant. Therefore, my teaching philosophy is threefold: make math interesting, possible, and relevant. I want students to care about what we learn but in order to do that, we must make the content interesting. This can be done by asking questions to pique curiosity (progressivism) such as, “How can math help me determine whether I should buy an iPhone or a Galaxy S8?” Students are more likely to learn if they feel they can relate to the content. Lastly, I teach in such a way that content is learned, used again, and built upon (cognitivism, constructivism). So much of what we learn seems to be lost because we cannot see the inherent significance behind it. I hope to teach in such a way that students not only find math relevant, but interesting and a tool to success rather than an obstacle.
