 Chapter 8: Algebraic Problem Solving

Variable - a variable is a letter used to represent one or more numbers; Example: In the expression 2x+3, the letter "x" is a variable.

Equation - an equation is a statement that is formed by placing an equals sign between two expressions. Example: The statement 10=2x+3 is an equation

Algebraic Expression - An algebraic expression consists of numbers, variables, and operations to be performed. Example: 7p+2.50

Evaluate - To evaluate an expression is to find the value of an expression by replacing each variable with a given value, and simplifying the result.

Solve - To solve means to find the value of the variable that makes the equation true.

One-Step Equation - solving an equation that requires only one operation is called a one-step equation.
