First Grade News

February 23rd, 2009
We only have two weeks left until the end of the 3rd quarter.  Thank you to all of the parents that helped your child turn in their missing work.  I will again be sending home notes about any missing work.  It must be completed before the end of the quarter to be included in their grade.

What We Will Be Doing This Week
We have just begun a new anthology unit called Folktales.  In this unit, students will be reading some well-known tales, but also some with a new twist.  As with the previous unit, students' reading skills will be developed within the context of the unit stories and theme.  This week we are reading a story called The Chase.  It is a Kutenai Indian tale featuring animal characters with human traits.  In religion we will be learning about Lent.  On Friday we will get to participate in Stations of the Cross.  In math, we are continuing to learn about shapes.  This week we will learn about solid shapes.  In writing, we will be learning about verb forms.  We are continuing to learn about earth science.  We will learn about rocks and minerals this week.  In social studies we will be concluding our unit and preparing for the test next week.  We are on spelling list 16 this week.

Mardi Gras Party
On February 24th, we will have a Mardi Gras party.  We are needing parents to volunteer to come help or bring items for the party.  Please look for a sign up sheet outside of our door sometime this week.
