Math - graded homework due Friday, February 18

Special Note: This is related to the table in number 8 of the math graded homework. I have received questions about this, therefore, I want to share some hints. The class and I answered it together yesterday and I am going to give you some detail here and hopefully between the two, it will trigger understanding. Otherwise, please do not worry! I do not plan to be a tough grader on this table.Ways to make a hexagon.

The ways the students are expected to build the hexagon is to go across the table considering how many of each the hexagons, rhombuses, and triangles would be used in each way.

The table includes 2 of the ways. The first being using 1 hexagon, 0 rhombuses, and 0 triangles to make a hexagon; the last way in the table is to use 6 triangles, thus, 0 rhombuses, 0 triangles.

So, one reason they are tricking all of us is that there are really no other ways to use a hexagon to make the shape of a hexagon (as it would leave no other room for a rhombus or a triangle.) Now, try going through the table, one row at a time and consider, "if we add one rhombus, can we add another rhombus or a triangle until we have built a hexagon?" Another trick, although more tedious is to cut out 3 hexagons of equal size. Cut one into 3 rhombuses and the another into 6 triangles. Then use the smaller shapes to build the hexagons and record your findings.
