Our reading instruction has several components. First, reading strategies are taught through the use of read alouds and minilessons. Students are expected to use these strategies during independent reading. In addition, students should always write their thoughts about their reading in their double entry journal. Students will participate in guided reading groups, which will focus on specific reading needs of the students. Finally, I will meet with students individually to discuss their reading.
In order to assess student progress, I have developed several grading rubrics, which are listed below.
Independent Reading Rubric
|Respects Others||Student reads quietly Student stays in one place in the reading area||Student reads quietly Student moves around once or twice but does not distract others||Student makes noises while reading Student stays in one place in the reading area||Student reads loudly, making repeated noises Student fidgets or moves around frequently, disturbing others|
|Stays on Task||Student works the entire period on independent reading, classwork, or guided reading activities Student does not require reminders||Student works most of the period on independent reading, classwork, or guided reading activities Student works with minimal reminders||Student inconsistently works on independent reading, classwork, or guided reading activities Student requires reminders of assigned tasks||Student hardly ever works on independent reading, classwork, or guided reading activities Student needs constant reminders of assigned tasks|
|Chooses Appropriate Books||Student chooses a book which has not been read before Text is a just right book||Student chooses a book which has been read before or has not been read before Text is a bit too easy but has been approved by teacher||Student chooses a book which has not been read before Text is too easy||Student chooses a book which has been read many times before Text is too easy|
|Reading Comprehension||Actively and effectively utilizes the core reading strategies||Often utilized the core reading strategies (sometimes ineffectively or inaccurately)||Inconsistently uses the core reading strategies and/or is often inaccurately applied||Hardly ever uses the core reading strategies and frequently inaccurate application of strategies|
