The Science Behind Slime

For this project students will have the oppurtunity to learn about slime and create their own perosonalized slime. First students will learn the basic about slime. Afterwards, Students will complete a true or false game on different facts about slime.

I will be teaching:

What is slime made of?

What is Borax and Boric Acid?

What is a Non-Newtonian fluid?

Does vinegar dissolve water?

Questions that will be asked:

True or false? All basic slimes are made the same way.

True or false? Slime is not formed from just two main ingredients.

True or false? Borax and Boric Acid are different molecules, but they both do the same thing in water

True or false? Slime is a non-Newtonian fluid

True or false? Vinegar will not dissolve slime

How we will make the slime:

Ingredients

  • 12 oz of Elmer's white glue
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Baking Soda
  • 2 tablespoons of contact lens saline solution (or more, add as needed)

Directions

  1. Pour 12 ounces of glue into a container to mix your slime in.
  2. Add 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda. Mix together.
  3. Add drops of washable glitter paint. This won’t stain your hand like food coloring will! Mix together again. You can even add more glitter if you’d like. It says inside the slime!
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of saline solution.
  5. Mix the saline solution into your slime until it starts to form together

They will be graded off of how good they preform on the true or false test, how well their slime comes out and participation. Rubric below:
