Chapter 22 Introduction to Plants

Chapter 22.1
What is a Plant?

Define Vocabulary

Alternation of Generations

Activating Prior Knowledge

List some things that we already know about plants?  What are some different types of plants?

Read “Think about it” on page 634

Characteristics of Plants

Plants are classified as members of the Plantae Kingdom.

Plants are Eukaryotes that have cell walls.

Plants undergo photosynthesis using chlorophyll a and b.

Most plants are autotrophs.

What Plants need

Sunlight: As energy to power photosynthesis.

Gas Exchange: Carbon dioxide is required to carry out photosynthesis. Gas exchange occurs in the atmosphere and in soil.

Water & Minerals: Plants absorb water, minerals & nutrients from the soil needed for plant growth. (See Fig. 22-2)

The History & Evolution of Plants

 On pages 636- 637 Read & Discuss:

  -Origins in the Water

  -The First Land Plants

-An Overview of the Plant Kingdom

The Plant Life Cycle

Land plants have a distinctive life cycle that sets them apart from most other living organisms.

The life cycle of land plants have 2 alternating phases, a diploid (2N) phase and a haploid (N) phase.

The multicellular diploid (2N) phase is known as the sporophyte or spore-producing plant.

The multicellular haploid phase (N) is know as the gametophyte or gamete producing plant. (See Fig. 22-5 and 22-6)

Read “Think about it” on page 639

Read “ Green Algae” on page 639

The First Plants

Green algae are mostly aquatic. They are found in fresh and salt water and in some moist areas on land. (See Fig. 22-7)

See Fig. 22-10 on page 641
