By Dave Eggers (any bookstore) The purpose of this non-credit English Language Institute course is to help students prepare for enrollment in regular college classes by developing the skills necessary for academic success. Regular attendance, participation in class activities, and completion of assignments are essential to learning and preparation for college studies. The course will include practice tests for the essay part of the college placement test. The results of this essay will determine the student’s eligibility to take college writing courses. Course instruction and assignments are in the following areas: 
  • Writing
      organization, grammar and mechanics, expression and vocabulary,         format, development of topic, research and documentation skills 
  • College Lectures & Test Preparation
      understanding, note-taking, asking and answering questions, test preparation and   test-taking practice 
  • Academic Content Areas -- Group Discussions and Team or Individual Projects
      development of oral skills and ability to solve problems and complete assignments    with others 
  • Journal
      development of reading, writing, and critical thinking skills
