How do you ensure equitable digital access in your classroom?

The use of technology is an ever growing aspect in all classrooms. Technology not only enhances students’ learning but technology also assists students in achieving proficiency towards other goals. As teachers, it is our responsibility that our students have the tools and resources they need to succeed. The equitable access to technology within classrooms is vital for our students.

Equity is defined as a quality of being fair and impartial. The equitable access to technology in classrooms depends on a fair schedule that is implemented consistently. Structured and fair schedules for all students will enhance learning and assist in reaching their academic goals. Below are some strategies for implementing equitable digital access in your classroom.

A structured schedule will help ensure that all students have access to technology in the classroom. For example, a teacher  has 18 students but only 6 iPads. The teacher can group her students into teams of three.

Timed tech use will also ensure the equitable digital access within the classroom. For example, your class has a 1:1 ratio of students and iPads. Use a timer to ensure equal use among the entire class for the day.

Drawing names is a popular strategy in elementary classrooms for many activities. A teacher can write each individual student name on a popsicle stick. The popsicle sticks can be drawn for use of the interactive smartboard during whole group time.
