At the beginning of the year, we read a book entitled Have You Filled a Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids. The story promotes positive behavior by demonstrating compassion and appreciation for one another (bucket filling). The story also addresses understanding the effects of our actions and words (bucket dipping).
My classroom is a positive learning environment for my students. My students are aware of what is expected of them, both behaviorally and academically. As a class, we decide on the rules for all students and on the goals for each individual for the year. Throughout the year, I focus on character traits, such as respect, responsibility, honesty, and compassion.
Along with students encouraging students to acknowledge one another for positive behavior, I consistently recognize students through praise or reward when I see them demonstrate one of the character traits.
A person's a person, no matter how small.
