Quotations

"Quotations"

Quotations are used to show a person's exact words. Notice that a comma is also used before the quotation at the end of the sentence.

Examples of quotations at the end of a sentence:

Mrs. Downs said, "You need to write neatly."

Mrs. Downs said, "Write neatly please."

Mrs. Downs asked, "Did you write neatly?"

Mrs. Downs exclaimed, "You did a great job!"

Use a a comma inside the quotations when the quotation is at the beginning of the sentence and the quotation is a declarative (statement) or imperative (command).

Examples of quotations written at the beginning of a sentence:

"Always write neatly," said Mrs. Downs.

"Write neatly please," said Mrs. Downs.

"Did you write neatly?" asked Mrs. Downs.

"You did a great job!" exclaimed Mrs. Downs.
