Announcements...

The Webelo Scouts of Cub Scout Pack 3274 based here at Fishcreek is having a Food Drive to benefit the food pantry of Stow United Methodist Church. If any students want to bring in canned and non-perishable food items or baby items (ie, wipes and diapers), boxes will be located in the fourth grade classrooms as well as outside of the office. The food drive will run through November 9th. Let's stock up the food pantry before Thanksgiving and help the Scouts with this important service project!

 

If you are willing to donate pajamas or kid friendly band aids, Student Council has a collection box by the school office. We will collect through Friday, November 30^th.  Thank you!

REFLECTIONS PROGRAM 2012-2013

"THE MAGIC OF THE MOMENT"

WHAT IS REFLECTIONS? The Ohio PTA, through National PTA, holds an annual cultural arts program, Reflections. Children in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit works of art in six areas: literature, visual arts, photography, Dance Choreography, Film/Video and musical composition. The Reflections program allows PTAs throughout the state to recognize children for their creativity in portraying yearly themes. Teachers, parents, children and community can get involved in enhancing arts education though the Reflections program. The Reflections Program is one of the best examples of the PTA's ability to bring out the best in our youth. PTA strongly supports education in the arts.

After the forms are turned in, you will receive packets of information and entry forms on one or more categories your student will participate in

 

Students are responsible for bringing a jacket, coat, etc. for the changing weather. The Clinic NO LONGER has these to loan to students. Students may need to call home for a coat to be brought to them. For future reference, the Clinic will only have gloves/mittens for loan.

 

It’s not too late to join PTA.  You can join anytime during the school year, but in order to qualify for the classroom with the most memberships popsicle party, you need to join by end of October.  Winning classroom will be announced in November.  Membership is only $5 per adult, no matter how many children you have in the school.  Please return the attached flier to your child’s teacher along with your cash or check OR you can now join online at http://fishcreekpta.jbfsecure.com.  Any questions, please contact Michelle Sheline, 330-346-0203 or msheline@neo.rr.com

All parents who drop off children during the morning arrival time, must do so at the school’s side entrance doors only. Please do not drop off children across the street from the school or in the front of the building. Thank you for following correct drop-off procedures.

***For Birthday Treats, please refrain from sending in anything edible. We have several different food allergies, and it would therefore result in too many students not enjoying the same treat. If you decide to send anything in, you could do party hats, pencils, a book for the class, even their favorite game from home and we could play indoor during our afternoon recess, etc. Thank you for your understanding!

 

Progress Book has been updated and will show the most recent grades for your child.  I will select "missing" for any missing assignment either because it was never turned in or was turned in without a name and never claimed.  ** YOUR LOGIN INFORMATION REMAINS THE SAME AS THE PREVIOUS YEAR, SO IF YOU STILL HAVE THAT INFO, IT WILL ALLOW YOU TO LOGIN. ·      READ, READ,  READ!!!   Don’t forget to send in your child’s monthly reading calendar, which includes 20 minutes of reading every day during the week and one hour every weekend! 

YOUR CHILD'S SECOND MILLION MINUTES CALENDARS WERE BE DUE ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1st. The best way to keep track of the calendar is to keep it inside their orange take-home folder.

 

Remember that you can place your scholastic book orders online by using the code GVXTQ.  Each time an online order is made, our class receives a FREE BOOK!  Look for September's order forms coming home soon!

What’s happening in...
Language Arts:  This week we will read our next Time for Kids as a class and other texts in small groups.  We will continue working on how to adjust reading rate; finding a good-fit book; use plural and possessive nouns correctly; using Venn Diagrams; author's purpose; writing directions/instructions ("how-to"). Our vocabulary quizzes are usually on Fridays, but our new spelling tests will be taking place throughout the middle of the week. Look for spelling word sorts coming home this week!

Science/Social Studies: 

We have started our next Social Studies unit on local government. We will be learning about our community, rights, authority, security, power, mayor, laws, service, city council, and taxes. Our test will be on/around Thursday, November15th.

 

Math:

We will be working in our workbooks, which are being kept at school. From time to time, your child may tear out a page or two for homework, but it is important to leave the workbook at school because we will be using them on a daily basis.

Your child will be bringing home plenty to study/review for each test and can also use the handbook that you will receive during conferences.

 

Our third unit is "Collections and Travel Stories." In this unit we will discuss:

• How are the numbers from 0 to 9,999 made up of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones?
• What is addition and subtraction?
• How can knowing that addition and subtraction are opposites help us to subtract one number from another?
• How can we break apart and combine hundreds, tens, and ones to add and subtract, up to 1,000?
• What does the equal sign tell us about the numbers on both sides of it?

 

 

Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts with your child.  It's also never a bad idea to practice telling time to the minute, counting money, estimating, and working on place value!
