KPREP and ESL
Requirements for English Learners to take the KPREP assessment can be found on the KDE website (below), however, usually after being in the United States for one year, the student is required to take the assessment. If they have not been in the country for very long (under 3 years) this is a daunting task. This is especially difficult at the middle and high school levels. Added to the language difficulty are other factors such as the student's education in his or her home country, the student's parents' education, the student's literacy in his or her own language, etc. There are many things a teacher can do to help the EL be able to navigate through an assessment. One thing is to show them how to zero in on key words and how to work around vocabulary with which they aren't familiar. Another strategy is to provide them with graphic organizers to help them brainstorm vocabulary and to organize it into an answer. (for writing prompts) Below is a list of test words they need to understand. Go to the graphic organizer section for sample organizers.
