Home -  Biography page for mr. hawkins

I was born and raised in the State of Michigan, but I have lived in Missouri, Ohio, Rhode Island, Washington, California, Virginia, and Texas before moving to Florida three years ago.  I came to Florida to work in the boating industry, but that didn’t work out, so, after some mentoring from friends at church, I am now a school teacher.

My previous careers included being a police officer, firefighter and EMT in Michigan, as well as extensive experience in security management & private investigations.  I also spent thirteen years serving as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy.  I was a Surface Warfare Officer (“ship driver”) and a Training Specialist.  I did a Western Pacific deployment in the USS Constellation (CV-64) during the height of the Cold War and a Mediterranean deployment in USS Truett (FF-1095) during Operation Desert Storm.  Since I left the Navy, I have been an active volunteer member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

We have had a very dynamic time in class so far this semester.  We are taking an interdisciplinary approach this year for Social Studies.  The students have been tasked with a number of projects to complete that include elements of World History, United States History, Geography,  American Government and Economics.  As always, we will take a maritime-related slant to much of the work being done.  In addition to the projects that each student is required to complete, they will also be doing self-study to complete chapters in their assigned textbooks so they can complete their credits in the required subjects for graduation.  Examples of some of the projects being accomplished are specific country studies or a detailed study of a specific timeframe.

About mr. Hawkins’ maritime studies class

We have really done some exciting things in Maritime Studies:  We have taken field trips to Port Manatee and to the Port of Tampa to see the world of commercial shipping and cruise lines.  Next month we are going to spend time at the AMI Boatyard in St. Pete learning about small boat maintenance and repair.  I’m also going to be doing presentations on careers in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.
