Description
We are going to move a little more rapidly now as we consider the development of America's identity in the three decades after Thomas Jefferson left the White House. This was an extremely rapid time of America's growth - both geographically and conceptually.
We will also examine the factors that led to the War of 1812 and what happened during the war.
Objectives
Students will identify and describe key events of this time period.
Students will create evidences of learning connected to this time period.

You may work in groups of up to three for this assignment.
Use the online text - Chapters 16 and 17 - on the class web site as you work on this assignment.
We may or may not use the documentary about the War of 1812. That will depend on which class period you are in.

Essay Questions
Select three of the following questions to answer. Each of these questions will require a paragraph or two. Again, be contextual.
- Tecumseh has an interesting legacy in America. This is the case even though he died a pretty gruesome death fighting against America. How did his legacy come to be what it is?
- Which parts of America supported the war? Which opposed it? Why were the responses so different?
- Why did the British want to control Lake Champlain? What was their larger plan? Describe the Battle of Plattsburgh. Why was it so important to both sides?
- The Battle of New Orleans actually occurred after the peace treaty was signed. This was because communication across the Atlantic took weeks. What was the British goal in attacking New Orleans?
- Who did Andrew Jackson bring into the fight for New Orleans? What were the results of the fight?
- How did James Madison’s service shape America? Be specific. Use three or four examples.
- How did the War of 1812 affect Natives in America? Be sepcific. Use several examples.
- Describe the effects of the War of 1812 on Canadian and American Nationalism
- Read the Deciphered Letter primary source for Chapter 17. Why was this such an important document? What does it allege? Did the fact that author remains unknown affect its veracity?
