Spelling and Vocabulary Contracts

 

2012-2013 Spelling Contract

This is your spelling contract for the week. It is your choice how many activities you complete. Make sure to spell ALL words correctly on each activity.

Each week you are expected to complete a combination of assignments to total 30 points. For Example: Week 1 you completed write the words and underline vowels (5), write the words neatly in cursive (5), Classify words by parts of speech (10), and write an antonym for each word (10). This will be a total of 30 points. You must also complete a spelling review worksheet for 20 points.

All contract work will be due on Friday morning. Late spelling homework will not be accepted unless absent when due. This homework is meant to help you study for you test on Fridays. Do not wait until Thursday night to do all of your activities. Waiting will not benefit you in any way. You may only do each choice one time per week. Doing the same activities every week will not be allowed.

5 Point Assignment Choices

Write the words and underline all the vowels

Write words in reverse ABC order

Write the words and underline all the consonants

Divide each word into syllables

Write the words and cross out the silent letters

Write the words neatly in cursive

Write your words using one color for vowels and another color for consonants

Draw a picture of each spelling word

10 Point Assignment Choices

Write your words 3 times in cursive

Write your words 3x each in 3 different colors

Make a set of flash cards for studying your words

Make a word scramble and solve it using your words

Use all of your spelling words to write 10 or more questions

Write an antonym for each word

Look up your words in the dictionary and write their meaning

Using your dictionary find 10 of your spelling words and write down the page number along with the two guide words at the top of the dictionary page (Ex. Lone - pg. 514, loge - long)

Classify the words according to part of speech

Write sentences with each word

Write a newspaper article using 10 or more of the words

Write a great story using at least 10 of your spelling words

Write newspaper headlines using your words

Make a word search with all of your words

Write a letter to a friend using all of your spelling words

Create a cartoon strip using at least 8 spelling words

Type your spelling list four times; with each list typed in a different font (Print it out)

Tape record yourself spelling each word and bring in the tape for me

15 Point Assignment Choices

Cut the words out of magazines and newspapers and make a collage on construction paper

Cut out a picture from a newspaper or a magazine and use spelling words to write a story about the picture

For Example: Week 1 you completed find an antonym and synonym for each word (5), rewrite or paraphrase definitions (5), and research word origins by using a dictionary or online resource(10). This will be a total of 20 points.

Design a word web to develop and extend the meaning of a vocabulary word

Rewrite or paraphrase definitions

10 point Assignments Choices

Use vocabulary words with a graphic representations (picture)

Sort words using defined categories

Research word origins by using a dictionary or online resources

Describe how words are alike and different using a Venn diagram or T-chart

Create a picture collage that illustrates a vocabulary word

Write a simile or metaphor for half your vocabulary words.

Write sentences for all half of your vocabulary words

15 point Assignment Choices

Create a poem, rap or song that uses the half of the vocabulary words in context

Compare and contrast two or more words based on meaning and usage of the word in a sentence.

Create a radio announcement of a word and its meaning
