We are going to start reading about and studying an author/illustrator name Jan Brett. Has anyone heard of her? ~wait for student responses~ It’s okay for those of you who have not, by the end of this unit you will all be experts on the books she has written. The first book we are going to read by Mrs. Brett is called Mossy. It is a book about a box turtle that can grow a beautiful garden on her back. Before we start the book, let’s watch a funny video on a box turtle eating its’ favorite snack, that way we all know what a box turtle looks like and how they behave. ~students watch video~ Does anyone have anything they would like to share about the video? ~wait for student responses~ Nice comments, now let’s start reading. Who remembers talking about compound words yesterday? ~wait for responses~ Good, now while I read I want you to be on the lookout for compound words. As I read we will make a list of these words and try to guess what they mean. ~Questions while reading, Who are some of the characters? What is going on in the pictures on the side of the book? Do you think Mossy is happy about being taken by the doctor? Does Scoot look happy in these pictures? Why does Tory finally notice Mossy is not happy? What surprise do you think the doctor has planed? Was the doctor’s idea a good one? Do you think Scoot is waiting for Mossy?~ After reading we will discuss the compound words from the book, Lilypad, wildflowers, handsome, breathtaking, extraordinary, everything, outside, woodland, butterfly, everyone, inside, together, and waterfall. We will then look at the definitions we wrote down and compare them to the on-line dictionary definition, to see if our guesses were right. After having the class discussion, we will take our quiz.
