I have been the Art teacher at Glenn Martin since 1998. Over the years I have come to think of the students and faculty at Martin as an extension of my own personal family. I look forward to each opportunity to encourage creativity and broaden our perceptions of what ART really is...

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

TRASH TO TREASURE

This year's contest will be based on our school-wide storybook theme. Choose your favorite character, author, or setting from a book and create a piece of art using recyclable or reused products. Ideas could include any of the following: simple sculptures, dioramas, mosaics, collages, assemblages, mobiles or stabiles, or bottle characters.

Entries will be accepted on an individual basis ONLY. You may bring your creation to school from Thursday, April 18 until Tuesday, April 23.  NO ITEMS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER APRIL 23!! All items MUST be made from upcycled, recycled or reused products. Entries will be judged on creativity, craftsmanship, and upholding the contest guidelines.

Winners will be announced no later than April 26 in the following three categories:
Kindergarten - 2nd grade
3rd - 5th grade
6th - 8th grade
Winning entries will have the opportunity to represent Martin Elementary School with their "TREASURES," on Thursday, May 9th at the 5th annual Sustainability Fair sponsored by Mayor JH Graham at the Community Complex on the fairgrounds.
Fliers for this contest have been printed and passed out to all students.
For any further information feel free to contact Ms Ginger or Mrs Fairman.

Many artists are willing to share their ideas online and on youtube.

All students 3rd grade and up participating in Art this 9 weeks have been asked to produce a "trash to treasure" piece of art for class. They are NOT required to enter the contest, but requiring the project might encourage more involvement.

In preparation for state testing, younger students will review shapes and colors. You can help at home by playing games which reinforce those simple concepts. Tangrams are simple geometric shape puzzles which force students to apply principles of flipping and transferring shapes to make an image.

Enjoy investigating the following online links to expand your art knowledge!

Some of my favorites:

Tangram puzzles can be accessed online. This one can be downloaded to your computer, iPad, or smartphone... http://www.gieson.com/Library/projects/games/matter/

Learning to draw new things is always fun for youngsters!  The artist, Travis Foster, from Nashville, TN, has a YouTube site devoted to helping children learn to draw and become more
confident in their abilities.

My favorite new ORIGAMI resource is the website www.origamiplayer.com. Models are sorted by difficulty as well as subject matter. This site also animates each folding step to help anyone make better origami.

Check out the exhibits in Nashville at Frist Center for Visual Arts... When you visit, don't miss the Frist's "MARTIN ARTQUEST." It provides hands on activities for children of all ages.

The Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga houses one of the finest collections of American Art in the U.S. If you can't make it to Chattanooga, you can still find out what's going on at the museum.

I LOVE to create my own art using WORDLE.

It allows you to create art from a word list or selection of text from your favorite book...

Try it out!!

The annual origami unit continues to be a HUGE success, so I've provided a link with some new and exciting folding patterns for children of all ages. ORIGAMI
