Syllabus

Course Description:
This social studies class will focus on the study of the Eastern Hemisphere through the lenses of geography,
history, economics and civics. We will study early civilizations and continue through the Middle Ages to
learn how humans have interacted and progressed over time. We will also connect our historical studies to
current events. This class is project-based so there are fewer formal tests or quizzes; most units have a
culminating project that offer choice to students on how they demonstrate their learning.

2. Early Human Life and Migration
3. Introduction to Government

Absences:
1. If a student is absent, it is HIS/HER responsibility to get all make-up work.
Students should check the Class Calendar on the class website for what was missed. Electronic
copies of make-up work can be accessed under Unit Handouts & Materials.
2. Students should also check the Absent Folders in the red “While You Were Absent...” hanging
file in the classroom. Absent folders will have a summary of what was missed in class and
students’ work. If you have questions... ask!
3. Students will be given 2 days for each day absent to complete & turn in absent work. Due
dates do not change if they were set before the absence occurred.
4. Pre-arranged absences: If students are going to be absent for an extended period of time
they should collect work before the absence and check the class website. Pre-arranged absence
forms can be picked up in the main office or counseling office.

Class Expectations: - The number one rule in Lexi Sutkus is respect, respect, respect! Students are expected to
treat Mrs. Carson, peers, and guests in the classroom with respect at all times.
- The second most important rule is to come with a positive attitude! Class will be more exciting
and fun when you come in with a good attitude, I promise!
- Follow PACK behaviors. This means being Prepared, Actively engaged, Cooperative, and Kind
and safe! We are all a part of a pack – this helps maintain a safe and open learning environment for
everyone. Students will earn weekly PACK grades in Social Studies class.
- Be accountable for your actions and words. As a middle-schooler, you will be getting more
responsibilities to manage – you (not your parents) are expected to face consequences if you do not
take responsibility for your behavior and class work.
- Pay attention. Talking while the teacher is instructing or while other students are sharing will not
be permitted. Listen the first time directions are given.
- Students are NOT allowed to use cell phones or other personal technology in class
without teacher permission. There are some activities and projects where these devices are
appropriate and students will be told. If inappropriately used, the device will be confiscated.
It is okay not to know, but it’s not okay to not try!

Raffle Reward Program: At the end of each quarter, students will earn raffle tickets for
a chance to win fun rewards! Students earn tickets based on their positive Work Habits grades...
