Chapter 14: Divide by 1-Digit Divisors
Lesson 1: Estimate Quotients. Objective: To use compatible numbers to estimate quotients.
Lesson 2: Place the First Digit. Objective: To use place value to place the first digit in a quotient and to decide what each digit should be.
Lesson 3: Divide 3-Digit Numbers. Objective: To divide 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number.
Lesson 4: Zeros in Division. Objective: To divide when a zero is in the dividend or in the quotient.
Lesson 5: Choose a Method. Objective: To choose mental math, paper and pencil, or a calculator to divide greater numbers by a 1-digit number.
Lesson 6: Problem Solving Strategy: Interpret the Remainder. Objective: To decide how to interpret the remainder in a division problem.
Vocabulary: estimate, compatible numbers, division, quotient, remainder
estimate: to find an answer that is close to an exact answer
compatible numbers: numbers that are easy to compute mentally
division: the process of sharing a number of items to find how many groups can be made or how many items will be in a group
quotient: the number, including the remainder, that results from dividing
remainder: the amount left over after you find a quotient
Mark the place. Look to the right. 4 or less are out of sight. 5 and up will buy one more before they too are out the door. In those empty right-hand spaces, zeros keep the proper places.
