Reading & Language Arts
May 2 - 19, 2011

We are working on the "Coming of Age" unit, which will finish out the school year in English Language Arts.  Students have read the two novels - The Confessions of Charlotte Doyle  (Avi) and The Outsiders (Hinton).  The Hinton book is the Language Arts portion of an interdisciplinary unit that the entire team is doing.  We are working on the activities related to that unit now in each class.  The students have all necessary supplies and are working hard!  They have a contract in ELA outlining the requirements.  The entire contract is worth 80 points, so it's a considerable part of their grade this six weeks.  Be sure to ask your child about their project and ask to see the contract as well.  The entire project is due on Thursday, May 19.  The 700 pages of reading and documentation is due Wednesday, May 18.

Yes, the 2010-2011 school year is winding down.  Students are beginning to think about summer plans and their 8th grade year.  However, the learning will continue until the last day as we still have much to accomplish.  Please make sure that your child stays focused on his or her academics.  Watch the planner for notes home regarding behavior.  Question your child about what is going on in class.  Ask him or her how their behavior is and whether or not they are staying focused.  These things REALLY do work and your partership is very much appreciated.

I hope you will be able to join us for Field Day on the 10th and Honors Day on the 16th!  Let's finish S-T-R-O-N-G!!!

Please make sure that your child is reading nightly.  They are required to read a total of 700 pages each six week grading period.  Obviously, this takes time and your child needs to spend time daily reading.  Thank you in advance for your help with this.

Please take some time to read over the 7th Grade Language Arts standards.  There is a lot of good information at

Tutoring is held from 3:00 to 3:45 on Thursdays.  A student who plans to attend tutoring must return the tutoring pass at least one day before planning to stay.
