About Me

My name is Teresa Harden-Whitten. I am married to Brian Whitten. We have three beautiful children. Montana will be entering 10th grade. Kellen will be in the 8th grade; she is so excited about having me for a teacher. Then, there is Brilee Payne; he is our only son and is three. It is never a dull moment at our house.

I graduated from Hamilton High School. I attended Bevill State for two years. I then transfer to Mississippi State University (Go Dawgs) and graduated cum laude in December 2001. My husband and I were married at the Chapel of Memories on campus.

I hold a teaching certificate in Alabama and Mississippi and am highly qualified in English 7-12.

I began my teaching career at Mantachie High School in 2002. I taught 8th and 9th grade English and 7th grade reading. I stayed there two years. I was then hired at Russellville Middle School to teach 7th and 8th grade English and reading. I taught there for three years. During those three years, I received intensive training in teaching struggling readers and in teaching the writing assessment. I had a successful run here with the AWA scores. My last year, I had 89% of my students to score a 3 or 4 on the 7th grade writing assessment. The only students who did not make proficient or advance were not English-speaking students. I, then, returned to Mantachie and taught 7th grade English and one section of 8th grade English. It was a good experience, but my home is in Alabama, and thankfully, I got a call from Deshler Middle School. I could never imagine teaching anywhere else; it is a WONDERFUL place to teach and to learn. I have never seen such care given to students by the entire faculty. It is a special place.

My future goals are to finish my Master's degree from University of West Alabama. I anticipate graduating next summer. It is a task with three children, but I can do it. I also hope to start a news staff this upcoming year. I also want to try for Nationally Board Certification beginning August 2010.

My family and I attend Tharptown Baptist Church. We love going to the beach and spending time together. My husband and I (along with Brilee) golf ever chance we get. I also love playing the piano for our church. I have been playing since I was ten. I also enjoy painting, reading, and playing tennis.
