Unit Week!

Unit Week Assessments:

Pre-Assessment Knowledge:

For my ELA/SS unit, the students will be working on writing workshop and using maps to show where they think their class gingerbread man is hiding, and how he will get back to our classroom through writing, drawing, and labelling among other whole group activities. Upon observation and discussion with my resource teacher, it became clear to me that the students have had a lot of experience with writing workshop (they started this in the middle of November) and the learning concepts it entails, as listed above. The week before this lesson is taught the class will be focusing on gingerbread, but in a more basic, different way. Each school year my RT spends two weeks focusing on gingerbread in December. The week of my unit teaching will be the second week of gingerbread, and will expand on many of the ideas introduced the week before. During the week before my unit is taught, the students will be listening to different versions of the classic gingerbread story and working on retelling those story elements. Whereas, my unit will focus on different, creative gingerbread stories unlike the classic tales, such as, “The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School.” Throughout that week prior to my teaching, I will be conducting a brief pre-assessment to gauge where my students are at with these ELA writing concepts. I will be observing closely, questioning students during discussion and while they are writing/drawing, and analyzing their final product pages based on their retellings of the classic gingerbread tale. This data will be compared to their final products of my unit teaching week, the summative assessment, to check for growth and understanding. At this point in time, I have gotten to know the students and their specific needs (strengths and weaknesses) well. Specifically, I have learned how to appropraitely assess and accommodate the 2 students I have been observing over this semester. They will be provided with extra reinforcment and assistance throughout this entire unit teaching. We will slow down or advance the teaching material based on student’s responses.  All of this data will also be used to guide my instruction during the lesson.

Day 3: This tech-based assessment will be used on the SMART board to assess if student's understand the idea of making predictions and deciding an appropriate place the gingerbread could be hiding in the school. They will take turns going up to the SMART board and dragging a gingerbread man to the column that shows the room they predict he is hiding in. The 2 observed students will be given extra assistance with dragging items and making a prediction based on their thoughts and writing pages.

Day 4:  The rubric below will be used to assess student's final product writing pages. The 2 observed students will be assessed using this format as well; their differentiation will happen during writing process and activity time.
