6th Grade Course Description: In this introductory course, students develop an awareness of the

relationships between agriculture, science, and math. Major concepts covered in this course

include an overview of agriculture, hand tool identification and application, tree identification,

measurement, shop safety, and a woodworking project. *This is subject to change.

 

7th Grade Course Description: In this course, students develop an awareness of the relationships between

agriculture, science, and math. Major concepts covered in this course include an overview of

Virginia agriculture, identification of native Virginia trees, small animal care, measurement,

safety, and a woodworking project. *This is subject to change.

 

8th Grade Course Description: Major concepts covered in this course include horticulture science and

applications, forestry, natural resources, animal science, research, measurement, safety, FFA

and woodworking projects. *This is subject to change.

 

Required Resources: Students are expected to bring the following materials to class every day:

Pencil, agenda, and three ring binder. Students are required to wear closed-toe shoes while

working in the shop (no flip flops, sandals, crocs, or flats). Students without appropriate shoes will not

be allowed to work in the shop.

Requested (Optional) Resources: Hand sanitizer, tissues and/or dry erase markers.

 

Course Objectives:

1. To teach and reinforce the Virginia Standards of Learning.

2. To teach students practical and applicable technical skills, problem-solving skills, and

teamwork.

3. To use hands-on activities to increase classroom learning and encourage good school

attendance.

Laboratory (Shop) Safety and Expectations: Students will be working in the AgScience Shop

for a portion of the 9-weeks to complete a woodworking project. Students will be required to

wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes while in the shop. Due to safety concerns, carelessness

and “horseplay” will not be tolerated and may result in loss of shop privileges. Students will be required to pass a safety test with a 100% before working in the shop.

 

Absences/Make-Up Policy: Attendance is critical in this class due to the difficulty in making

up shop projects. The teacher will work with students as much as possible; however, excessive

absences may result in the student unable to complete certain assignments. It is the responsibility

of the student to see the teacher to receive missing assignments. Failure to complete missing

work will result in a grade of “0” for the assignment.

 

Special Notice: All plans are tentative and subject to changed based on time and resource availability.

 

Quizzes:  Quizzes will be give at the end of the unit.  Quizzes will be announced at least 1 week prior to when the quiz is administered.
