Autism fact - rates

During Autism Awareness Month last year, the rate of autism was estimated to be 1 in every 110 children.  Now, just one year later, the CDC has issued a new report stating that about 1 in 88 children has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.  In North Carolina, the reported rates are even higher -  1 in 70 children.

What does this mean for teachers?  If you haven't had a child with autism in your class, chances are you will.  These increasing rates highlight the need for educators to continue to expand their knowledge and expertise in working with this population of students.
