Summary: After 17-year-old Bella Swan begins living with her father, Charlie, in Forks, Washington, she is attracted to Edward Cullen. Edward is a mysterious and handsome boy at school. Bella is determined to find out his family's secret, and ultimately falls in love with him. When she learns he and his family are vampires, she puts her life at risk just to be with him, though the community of Forks is not aware of this secret. The Cullens have chosen to live in Forks because of the constant state of clouds and rain; they cannot be seen in sunlight because they shine like diamonds.

Character Descriptions:

Bella Swan is an out of place, very bright, pale, and clumsy 17-year-old. Because her mother is going to live in Florida with Phil, her new husband, Bella decides to move to Forks, Washington with her father.

Jacob Black is Billy's youngest son and becomes interested in Bella. He does not agree with Bella's association with the Cullens.

Edward Cullen is a 17-year-old vampire. He is extremely fast and can read everyone's mind except for Bella. Once Bella discovers his secret, the couple quickly begin to fall in love.

Personal Reflection: Stephanie Meyer does a great job expressing the characters feelings through Bella's narration. Though this novel is written on a fourth grade reading level, readers should not begin reading this book until seventh or eighth grade. The relationships and friendships that are formed throughout this novel are relevant to those entering these grades.
