I believe that spelling instruction, just like reading and math, should be tailor-fitted to meet your child's current needs.  Because of this, I do not give one spelling list for the whole class.  I assign several different spelling lists at a time to make sure your child receives a spelling list that is appropriate for his/her continued development in spelling.

Your child will be responsible for up to 20 spelling words every two week.  Each night of the week your child is expected to complete a spelling menu item to help ensure that these words and the spelling principles they represent are mastered.  Spelling homework will be checked daily.

Optional At-Home Spelling Activities Ideas:

Monday:  Do a word sort with your child.  Remind them to sort the words into categories like the ones we did in school.  Your child should read each word aloud in this activity.  Ask your child to explain to you why the words are sorted in a particular way - what does the sort reveal about spelling in general?  Have your child write the categories and words in their journal.

Tuesday:  Do a speed sort with your child.  Complete the activity from Monday, but see how fast your child can complete the sort on their own.  Have your child write the categories and words in his/her journal.

Wednesday:  Do a blind sort with your child.  Lay down a word from each category as a header and then read the rest of the words aloud.  Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it.  Lay it down in the category your child indicated and let your child move it if he or she is wrong. Have your child write the categories and words in their journal.

Thursday:  Do another blind word sort to prepare for Friday's practice test.  As you call out the words in random order your child should write them in categories.  Call out any words your child misspells or puts in the wrong category and have them write them correctly 3 times each.
